This carved figure of the Madonna was created for the Portuguese in Goa, India. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception was one of the most popular representations of the Madonna in the 17th century. She is depicted holding a rose in her hands and standing on a crescent moon; symbols associated with the Immaculate Conception. Similar examples are illustrated in the exhibition catalogues Levenson (ed.), 2007, p. 272 and Castillo, 2002, pp. 17, 23, 48 & 49. |
