Karel Ooms was born in Desschel and studied at the Academy of Antwerp. He spent much of his life travelling all over Europe and the Orient. Works of his can be found in museums of Antwerp and Brussels.

He is a sought-after Orientalist painter and is represented in the renowned collection of Shafik Gabr, Cairo, Egypt.
